The hormonal changes associated with peri-menopause and menopause can contribute to an extensive list of symptoms including, but not limited to, brain fog, insomnia, night sweats, hot flushes, irregular menstrual cycles, atrophic vaginitis, heavy bleeding and anxiety.
Many women experience a range of symptoms during this period of their life, and these symptoms can range from barely noticeable to disruptive, painful and a cause for concern.
While your nutrition, sleep and stress management play a major role in helping managing or reduce these symptoms, herbal medicine can also provide welcome relief. Many of the herbs used medicinally today have been used traditionally to support women’s health for thousands of years.
As a herbalist I will often prescribe herbal medicine as tonics, tablets or teas. My favourite herbal teas for women during peri-menopause and menopause include:
Red clover – Trifolium pratense
Red clover is naturally high in isoflavones which have been shown to activate oestrogen receptors, therefore mimicking endogenous oestrogen. This results in a reduction in both the incidence and severity of hot flushes. Red clover has also been shown to be beneficial for the treatment of menopausal atrophic vaginitis and improving vaginal dryness. Other studies have found Red Clover to have anti-cancer, cardiovascular protective and osteoporosis preventing properties.
Ziziphus – Ziziphus spinosa
Ziziphus is used in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) to reduce night sweats and spontaneous sweating, calm the nervous system, reduce anxiety and promote a deep rejuvenating sleep. It has been shown to help resolve anxiety-driven heart palpitations due to its mild sedative action.
I find Ziziphus particularly beneficial for women who experience excessive worry during menopause, to the point it is impacting their sleep quality, their energy and their mood.
Sage – Salvia officinalis
This well-known garden herb, used for its aroma and taste in mediterranean dishes, has a number of beneficial applications for menopause symptom.
Sage helps balance body temperature, reduces the incidence of hot flushes, night sweats and excessive sweating. It is a wonderful calming tonic for the nervous system, it is anti-oxidant, anxiolytic, anti-inflammatory and studies show it can be helpful in enhancing memory.
Red Raspberry leaf – Rubus idaeus
Best known for its uterine toning properties used to stimulate contractions in the late stages of pregnancy, red raspberry leaf tea is astringent and therefore helpful for restoring tone to the uterus after child birth and reducing heaving bleeding during peri-menopause. These astringent properties are also helpful in relieving painful menstrual cramps.
The red raspberry leaves are potent anti-oxidants and contain a number of valuable nutrients including Vitamins C, calcium, iron, phosphorus and sulphur.
Nettle leaf – Urtica dioica
Nettle leaf has an abundance of nourishing and restorative properties which have valuable application for menopause symptoms including; supporting joint and skin health, improving hydration and reducing inflammation in cases of atrophic vaginitis, supporting your nervous system and improving detoxification.
Naturally high in potassium and iron, Nettle leaf is particularly indicated for women with heavy menstrual bleeding, low energy, hormonal acne and a reduced ability to manage stress.
